West Virginia women’s soccer gears up for tough road match against Longhorns

AUSTIN, Texas — The West Virginia women’s soccer team (6-4-1) will face off against the Texas Longhorns (8-4-0) today in the hopes to rebound from a 4-2 loss to Baylor on Thursday.

“Texas is an athletic team with very talented players that can capitalize on any mistake,” coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “We will have to play a solid 90 minutes and limit the mistakes we make on our end. We are looking forward to getting another chance to continue to grow as a team.”

The loss to the Bears was the first conference loss of the season and was tied for the most goals given up by senior keeper Rylee Foster. Foster had a season-high eight saves in the match, though, and will look to hold off a quick Longhorns attack. Texas is undefeated through conference play.

The Longhorns are led by junior Haley Berg (19 points) and sophomore Julia Grosso (seven goals). Nicole Curry — the No. 1 and  No. 21 keeper in the conference and country, respectively — is expected to start today and holds six shutouts. She currently has a .828 save percentage to top the league.

Freshman Julianne Vallerand still leads the Mountaineers with 11 points (five goals, one assist).

The game will be broadcast on the Longhorn Network, and live stats can be found at WVUsports.com.
