Warren Chester “Moff” Moffett

Warren Chester “Moff” Moffett, 92, died peacefully at Point Manor Personal Care Home in Point Marion, Pa., Sept. 26, 2019, after a long decline with dementia.

He was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the late Chester Raymond and Melissa Kathryn (Fox) Moffett. Moff grew up in East Aurora, N.Y., and was a 1944 graduate of East Aurora High School, served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46 as a quartermaster third class on the USS Fitch and USS Doyle, and was a 1964 graduate of the University of Buffalo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Joan (Bechtel) “Becky” Moffett, who died in July 2018. They were married June 14, 1952 at the Baker Memorial Methodist Church in East Aurora. They resided most of their life in Western New York: East Aurora and Buffalo, until their move to West Virginia in May 2018.

Moff is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth D. Moffett and her husband, D. Matthew Powell, of Arlington, Va., and Kathryn Moffett Bradford and her husband, Geoffrey E. Bradford, of Morgantown; and his four grandsons of whom he was extremely proud and knew him as Opa, Edward D. Powell and his wife, Kayla, and Robert M. Powell, of Arlington, Va., and Benjamin R. Bradford and Ian T. Bradford, of Morgantown. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Thomas Bechtel and his wife, Dorie, of Middlebury, Vt.

Moff was a member in Buffalo of the Equality Club and the Unitarian Universalist Church. He had many interests and hobbies which included: history, German beer steins, genealogy, Scottish games, crossword puzzles and sports, with a special passion for the Buffalo Bills. He worked at helping to preserve the Millard Fillmore House as well as the Roycroft Inn in East Aurora, and he served as the Town of Aurora Historian from March 1987 to December 1995. He and Becky traveled extensively; Moff was proud that he had been to all 50 states, visiting all U.S. Presidential Libraries, and many foreign countries. One memorable trip was back to China, seeing places he had visited while serving in the U.S. Navy. Hobbies were his vocation.

A special thanks to Point Manor for their loving care of Moff.

A service in East Aurora is planned at a later date. Moff gifted his body to the WVU Human Gift Registry.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Moff’s memory can be made to the Roycroft Campus Corp., 31 S. Grove St., East Aurora, NY 14052.
