KINGWOOD — Bill and Lacinda Wiles said they wanted to do something for their community. They decided to start a business.
“I lost my job after 20 years,” Bill Wiles said. “God spoke to me about doing something for my community. Every community needs an ice cream shop.”
The couple opened their business in Kingwood and named it Scoops of Joy.
“We wanted to bring some joy to the little kids and offer them a place to have their birthday parties,” he said.
“It’s scary to open a new business,” Lacinda Wiles said. “There is so many places a Christian business is frowned upon.”
She was referring to the word joy in their sign. Lacinda Wiles said joy means Jesus first, others second and you last.
Bill Wiles said they have been blessed by the customers who enjoy ice cream and coffee at the shop at 212 W. Main St., in the former Estep & Shaffer building.
The menu includes a large variety of yogurt, hand-dipped and soft-serve ice cream, milk shakes, sweet dreams (a product similar to a DQ Blizzard), ice cream cones, waffle cones, ice cream cakes, sundaes, coffee and cappuccino. There is also a self-serve toppings bar with a large variety of toppings, including fresh fruit.
“We hope to have hot food for the winter,” Lacinda Wiles said. “We want to have homemade bread and soups.” She said Pepsi products will be on the menu soon.
Bill said he and Lacinda are getting a handicapped accessible game room ready upstairs for parties.
