One dead in Green Bag Road fire

An overnight fire at a home on Green Bag Road left a 48-year-old man dead.

According to the WV State Fire Marshal Facebook page the man appeared to die from smoke inhalation. There were no smoke detectors in the house and while the cause of the blaze is currently undetermined, it appears accidental.

Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department was called to the working structure fire at 836 Green Bag Road about 11:40 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Chief Jimmy Lipscomb.

The department began fighting the fire by surrounding the single-story building in a defensive position to get the fire under control because of how engulfed the building was, Lipscomb said.

Once it was under control firefighters went inside, discovered the man in the bedroom, pulled him out and handed him to Mon EMS.

“He wasn’t in good shape but he was still alive,” Lipscomb said.

The fire was extinguished and firefighters left the scene between 2-2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, Lipscomb said.

Since the fire was fatal, the State Fire Marshal was contacted and investigators were sent out. Lipscomb said he went back to the scene until they finished up between 7-8 a.m. Wednesday.

The Dominion Post has reached out to the Office of the State Fire Marshal for more information.

According to the MECCA911 Facebook page, Green Bag Road was closed for roughly three hours.

Westover VFD, Cool Springs VFD, Granville VFD and Triune Halleck VFD also responded to the fire.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
