One in four adults over age 65 suffers falls, according to the National Council on Aging.
Such falls cause nearly all hip fractures suffered by those individuals, and 53% of adults discharged from a hospital for a fall-related hip fracture will fall again within six months.
FYZICAL North Central West Virginia, a physical therapy, balance, dizziness and healthy lifestyle practice with locations in Westover, Star City and Sabraton, launched a fall prevention awareness initiative “Fight The Fall” Monday.
This campaign highlights the importance of reducing fall risks for the community’s older population. Monday kicked off the program and also served as National Falls Prevention Awareness Day.
Now through Oct. 22, the north-central West Virginia FYZICAL team will offer free fall risk assessments.
Fall prevention is important to FYZICAL staff.
“Through our use of advanced technology, information and science, we aim to educate our community, which includes the older adult population in addition to their caregivers, on the importance of understanding the risks associated with falls,” said Lincoln Kinkade, FYZICAL physical Therapist. “We’re honored to provide the Morgantown community valuable information that has the potential to save lives.”
