Morgantown girls’ soccer team routs Brooke 9-0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — During its senior night, the Morgantown High girls’ soccer team put on a stellar offensive performance in a 9-0 victory over Brooke at Pony Lewis Field.

Senior midfielder Sammie Brown led the charge for the Mohigans, scoring three goals and notching the hat trick.

Anna Iquinto scored two goals for MHS (7-2-1) while Ashleigh Weaver, Anna Iquinto, Georgia Blake, Amanda Weaver and Alyssa Weaver each scored goals.

MHS coach Stirlin Rivers said that his team “played very well” after the game.

The Mohigans began the game cool and collected, sharing the ball and not attacking too soon.

Brown scored the first goal of the game in the 11th minute to give MHS the early lead. Not too long after her first goal, the standout rebounded a missed shot and scored again — giving her team a 2-0 lead.

After 20 minutes of play, Ashleigh Weaver sent a penalty kick over the head of Brooke’s goalie to score the team’s third goal of the contest.

With only a minute left in the first half, Brown found the back of the net again to notch her third goal of the game to give MHS a 4-0 advantage as it headed into halftime.

During the second half, the Mohigans began to pull away even further.

Junior forward Anna Iquinto snuck a ball through the lower-left corner of the goal to put MHS up by five.

Not long after Iquinto’s goal, freshman Georgia Blake scored yet another point, which added to the team’s blowout victory. After Blake’s goal, freshman Amanda Weaver scored one for herself as well.

With just a couple minutes remaining in the second half, junior midfielder Alyssa Weaver topped the game off with a goal of her own to put the Mohigans up 9-0.

“Obviously, the team we played tonight isn’t as tough as a team like Parkersburg South or Wheeling Park, but the good thing is that we didn’t perform at their level,” Rivers said. “We played well, kept people moving in and out and stuck to our game plan.”

Morgantown only allowed four shots on goal and capitalized off two penalty kicks. The Monarchs struggled to get in a rhythm the entire game because of the Mohigans’ defense.

MHS girls’ soccer team will play again at 10 a.m. Saturday as it hosts Grafton.
