Preston, Monongalia police charge man with multiple felonies

KINGWOOD — A man on the run from police has been charged with felonies in two counties.

Mark Allen Hart, 33, of Morgantown, was arrested without incident about midnight Monday night by Monongalia County police, who surrounded a house where they were received a tip that he was staying.

Mon Sheriff Perry Palmer said deputies, State Police and Granville Police participated in the arrest.

Trooper 1st Class M.P. Sternart charged Hart with grand larceny. According to that criminal complaint, about noon Sept. 11 Hart was seen by two people who knew him and on surveillance video walking around the lot at Finish Line Motors on Earl Core Road.

About that time, the keys disappeared from inside a Chevrolet Avalanche, according to the complaint. That’s the day after Hart is accused of fleeing from Preston County police. Hart is seen re-entering the lot about 4 a.m. Sept. 12 and driving off in the Chevy, according to the complaint.

Preston Sheriff’s Deputies said Hart ran from them last week, after a deputy saw him walking along W.Va. 92 in Arthurdale. Hart stripped to his underwear and swam across a pond as part of his escape.

He later stole a 2009 Subaru from a residence on CR Road, according to a criminal complaint by Preston Sheriff’s Cpl. W.T. McNair. The son of the car’s owner, Charles Haun, told police he had put $5,000 inside the Subaru before it was stolen.

The vehicle was found abandoned on Cobun Creek Road in Mon County. McNair charged Hart with grand larceny, fleeing with reckless indifference and third-offense driving on license revoked for DUI.

Hart was also served with a June warrant charging him with burglary. According to that complaint by Preston Deputy R.A. Stockett Jr., Hart entered a home on the Old Tunnelton Pike, struck a man in the face and threatened to stab him.

Hart was remained in the North Central Regional Jail Wednesday.
