MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — The West Virginia men’s basketball team picked up a third verbal commitment Sunday for the 2020 class when junior-college guard Kedrian Johnson chose the Mountaineers.
Johnson is a 6-foot-4 high-scoring guard from Dallas, who began his Division I career at Saint Peter’s University in Jersey City, N.J., before transferring to Temple (Texas) College, where he averaged 25.6 points per game and shot 46.8 percent from the floor. Johnson shot 75-of-198 (37.6 percent) from 3-point range.
Johnson visited WVU last weekend and was in town during the Mountaineers’ 44-27 football victory against North Carolina State.
He will play his redshirt sophomore season at Temple College this year and would have two seasons of eligibility remaining at WVU beginning in 2020.
Johnson chose West Virginia over offers from New Mexico, New Mexico State and Buffalo.
He already has an in with the Mountaineers’ roster.
Temple College plays in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference, the same conference WVU guard Taz Sherman played in at Collin Community College.
Temple and Collin split two regular season games last season, with Johnson averaging 29.5 points and six steals in those contests.
The Mountaineers now have three commitments for 2020. Johnson joins 4-star high school forward Isaiah Cottrell, who will play his senior season at Huntington Prep, as well as 3-star forward Taj Thweatt (Wildwood, N.J.).
The recruits will be eligible to sign with WVU as early as Nov. 13.
