No. 22 WVU, No. 8 Penn State lock at 1 in rivalry matchup

No. 22 West Virginia (2-2-1) and No. 8 Penn State (3-1-1) duked it out in their yearly rivalry matchup, but neither team came out with the win as a 1-1 stalemate was called at the 110th minute.

Rylee Foster had six saves through seven shots on goal, while Penn State’s Kat Asman tallied four saves against five shots on goal. Midfielder Ally Schlegal (3 S, 2 SOG) struck first for the Nittany Lions’, sinking the team’s only goal in the 29th minute.

Freshman Julianne Vallerand proved her worth once more, garnering the only Mountaineers goal on one of her two shots. Her netter came in the 49th minute.

Vallerand saw an uptick in minutes during the rivalry match, logging 88 minutes on the backline.

West Virginia maintained control for a majority of the lengthy game, and peppered Asman with 21 shots. Addison Clark (4) and Stefany Ferrer-Vanginkel (3) led the group in shots, but none were on goal.

Senior Jade Gentile (2 shots) led the team in shots on goal with two. Schlegal led Penn State in shots, and defender Kerry Abello matched her with two shots on goal to lead the team. The Nittany Lions took 11 total shots.

The Mountaineers had a 9-2 advantage in corners and commited 8 fouls compared to Penn State’s 12. Additionally, the Nittany Lions had four offsides calls against them while WVU had none. Abello was shown one yellow card at the 88th minute.

West Virginia next hosts Stony Brook on Thursday at 7 p.m.
