MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia men’s soccer team will host Wright State (1-1) tonight at 7 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Stadium — their first home game of the year.
The Mountaineers (1-1) will enter the match against their familiar opponent with a 5-4 overall record against the Raiders. Last year Wright State defeated West Virginia 3-0 in Dayton, Ohio.
West Virginia is coming off a 1-0 loss at Delaware and will look to their keeper Steven Tekesky to defend the net with veracity once more. Tekesky is ranked No. 2 in the MAC in saves (8) and third in goals against average (.500).
On the offensive side of the ball, Andres Muriel Albino — fourth in the conference in shots (7) — will look to sink a shot after the team’s shutout loss on Monday.
Wright State enters the match with their own stars, including seniors Alec Philippe, Deri Corfe and Stefan Rokvic. The three scored 10 or more goals last season with Philippe leading the group with 11. Keeper Joel Sundell is going to be a challenge for the Mountaineers as well, who has stopped 13 shots through the Raiders’ last two games. The group is coming off a 4-2 road win over Memphis on Sunday.
“(Wright State is) a fantastic team,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “They have arguably the best front three that we’ll see all season long, and we’re going to see some good attacking players.
“They’re good, and people need to get past the name and understand the quality we have coming into town. We won’t underestimate them at all, and I think our guys will be up for it. Hopefully, the fans will understand that this is a very, very good opponent, and they’ll turn up and support the team, as well.”
