NEWARK, Del. — Briana Lynch led West Virginia (1-0) with a career-high 16 kills in the Mountaineers’ season-opening win over Delaware (0-1) Friday evening. It marked the 700th win in program history and head coach Reed Sunahara’s 375th.
West Virginia took the first (25-23), third (25-23) and fourth (25-15) sets while only dropping the second (25-23) to the Blue Hens.
Kristina Jordan and Kristin Lux each had 14 kills, three blocks and one ace to back up Lynch, while Audrey Adams tallied eight kills and four blocks.
In total West Virginia and Delaware matched in kill totals (55), but the Mountaineers had the edge in errors (23; UD 26); hitting percentage (.206-.171); aces (5-4) and blocks (9-8). The Blue Hens had 15 more attacks than West Virginia, but in the end couldn’t capitalize.
West Virginia will next face Coppin State today at 11 a.m. before closing out the Delaware Classic at 4:30 p.m. against Binghamton.
