No. 12 West Virginia set to take on No. 6 Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The No. 12 West Virginia (2-1-0) women’s soccer team will take part in their second top 15 matchup today when they visit No. 6 Virginia (3-0) at 2 p.m.

After a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Stanford on Sunday, the Mountaineers will look to playing their style of ball to overcome the Cavaliers. “We know how lethal Virginia can be so it’s going to be a battle for us to keep Virginia out of the net,” coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said.

“We need to just control what we can control and focus on playing West Virginia soccer.”

West Virginia is riding a 3-0 shutout over High Point on Friday, and will look to keep that momentum with striker Julianne Vallerand leading the group. The freshmen standout was key in the Friday night victory, netting two goals in the 76th and 84th minutes, with Addison Clark sinking one in the 83rd minute.

In the box for West Virginia is senior keeper Rylee Foster, who recorded her 33rd career shutout on Friday. Foster will play a prominent role in today’s matchup with the Cavaliers shutting out their three opponents this season — the most recent a 4-0 win over East Carolina.

Virginia isn’t just deadly on defense, as the group has logged 11 goals so far. The Cavaliers are led by a freshman of their own, Diana Ordonez, who has six goals and two assists (14 points).

West Virginia is 3-10-2 all-time against Virginia, as well as 6-0-1 at Klöckner Stadium.

The game will be broadcast on DirecTV (channel 612) and Spectrum (388), as well as YoutubeTV, Hulu, Playstation Vue, Dish Network and Sling TV.
