GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Four costly turnovers doomed the Clay-Battelle football team Friday night on the road at Gilmer County in a 34-21 loss.
The Cee-Bees (0-1) fumbled at the Gilmer (1-0) 1-yard line, which was a crucial turning point in the game. They also muffed two punts, which kept C-B’s offense off the field and kept the Titans’ on.
“Those four turnovers for us is pretty much what the game came down to,” coach Ryan Wilson said. “Our kids kept battling, and not to take anything away from Gilmer, they did a nice job. They took us out of our game, so they played a short field and we played a long field.”
The Cee-Bees got within five points with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Titans returned the kickoff 50 yards to the Clay-Battelle 26-yard line. Three plays later, Gilmer scored the clinching score.
C-B quarterback Seth Casino led the team in passing, going 2-6 for 34 yards and a touchdown. Running back Sean Hayes was a workhorse and finished with 178 yards on 30 carries. Bryan Enoff had 52 yards on 12 carries.
Cooper Watson finished with 37 yards receiving.
The Cee-Bees will host Meadow Bridge at 7 p.m. Sept. 6.
