John Fowkes named new athletic director at Trinity

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Trinity will have a new athletic director this school year, though it is a familiar face.

John Fowkes, who heads the Warriors’ boys’ basketball program and is an assistant on the re-established football program, will take over for Cary Woods. Woods turned in his resignation this summer after holding the position for four years.

“We are excited and have the upmost confidence in John Fowkes as the new Athletic Director at Trinity Christian School,” the school said in a statement. “Most recognize the success of coach Fowkes with the high school boys’ basketball team, yet we are equally as proud of the academic success John contributes to in the classroom. John has great passion, vision, leadership and knowledge for all sports programs at Trinity. His ability to build relationships with our student body, administrators and coaches is a great quality that will contribute to his success in the AD position. We believe John has the character necessary to lead our athletic programs with the Christian values that all of us connected with Trinity desire.

“Trinity appreciates Cary Woods tenure in the athletic director position at Trinity and we thank him for his dedication. He will be missed by the entire Trinity family, however, we look forward to seeing him in attendance at many of our upcoming athletic events.”

Fulfilling a goal, Fowkes is excited to take over his new post, effective immediately.

“I’m looking forward to helping the other programs grow like the boys’ and girls’ basketball programs, and that’s very important to me,” he said. “Fielding a football team and the further development of our facilities is also very exciting.”

Trinity will field its first football team since 2014 when it kick off its season Aug. 30, hosting Mapletown Pa.). The Warriors have tried several times to get the program on its feet, but in the end, it hasn’t worked out. Trying to sustain the football team is one of Fowkes’ most important priorities early in his tenure.

“Big things have been happening with our field and outdoor facilities since we have started football,” he said. “The lights have been put up. Press box and storage area is currently under construction. Future plans for locker rooms and a weight room are already being discussed. The development of new facilities will help all sports.”

Fowkes has had a lot of success since taking over Trinity’s boys’ basketball program three years ago. The Warriors have gone to back-to-back state semifinals and coaching is certainly something Fowkes was not ready to give up.

“A goal of mine is to win a state championship in basketball,” he said. “Coaching is something that is very important to me and I am not even close to ready to give that up. A busy schedule is something I enjoy and I look forward to the additional responsibilities the AD position brings to the table.”
