Man charged with causing wife’s death in DUI arrested for drunken crash

MORGANTOWN — A man accused of killing his wife while drunk driving a UTV in Preston County last year was arrested for DUI in Monongalia County on Saturday.

John David Dietz III, 29, of Morgantown, is charged with DUI and not having a test and lock system — or blow and go.

According to his indictment, Dietz was driving a UTV in the Red Rock Road area of Rowlesburg in August 2018 that was involved in an accident. His wife, Brieanne Nicole Dietz, 28, died as a result of the accident, despite being administered first aid by bystanders and state police.

Court records show not driving drunk is a condition of Dietz’s $25,000 bond in Preston County.

The Morgantown Police Department responded to a motorcycle accident in the area of Darst Street and Hampton Avenue on Saturday.

When the officer arrived, he saw a blue Harley Davidson with damage to its gas tank and Dietz being treated by EMS in a ditch, according to a criminal complaint. Dietz refused to go to the hospital.

Dietz “continually looked away” from the officer while speaking to him and the officer smelled alcohol on his breath. Dietz failed all of the standard field sobriety tests and had a BAC of 0.128%.

Dietz’s license required he have a test and lock system, more commonly known as a blow and go, the complaint said. His motorcycle did not and he was arrested for the two crimes.

After being taken to the police station and observed for 20 minutes Dietz gave a second breath sample and showed a BAC of 0.123%.

He was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on Sunday by Magistrate Darris Summers who set bond at $10,000. Bond has been posted.
