MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — The latest scholarship addition to West Virginia’s basketball roster has been there all along.
WVU head coach Bob Huggins said during a press conference Wednesday that 6-foot-11 center Logan Routt is back on scholarship for his senior season.
“He deserves it,” Huggins said. “He’s been on scholarship before. He’s had other (academic) scholarships where he had his tuition paid for. He’s never been without aid. This is a lot more comprehensive aid with the athletic scholarship than the other.”
Routt, who has played in 76 games over three seasons and scored a career-high eight points against Oklahoma last season in the Big 12 tournament, was on scholarship during the 2017-18 season.
He then relinquished it the following season to allow Huggins to sign an additional recruit.
Routt went back on scholarship at the start of summer school this year and is working toward a Master’s of Business Administration.
“He’s already a couple of classes into his master’s degree,” Huggins said.
Routt redshirted as a true freshman in 2015 after walking on from Cameron. In high school, Routt was named an OVAC All-Star and was the co-Mason Dixon Player of the Year as a senior. He set a school recrod with 146 blocks in a season.
Routt graduated with a degree in sport management in May.
For his college career, Routt is averaging 1.6 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.
“You talk about a guy, he’s always been like, ‘Coach, if you need a scholarship, that’s fine.’ He’s never felt neglected or left out or pouted. He’s been great.”
Routt’s addition gives the Mountaineers 12 scholarship players for next season. The NCAA limit is 13 and Huggins said the team may not look to fill the 13th scholarship for next season.
“I don’t know that we absolutely have to have 13,” Huggins said. “We have had before. If you think about it, like we took Lamont (West) really late (in 2015) and it was for Lamont to continue to grow. He’s a guy who continued to grow physically and as a basketball player.”
