Man accused of hotel shooting found dead in jail

A North Carolina man accused of being involved in a hotel shooting earlier this month was found dead in jail.

Janson A. Davenport, 21, was found unresponsive Sunday in his cell at North Central Regional Jail, according to West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety spokesperson Andy Malinoski.

Life-saving procedures were followed and Doddridge County EMS pronounced Davenport’s death about 10 p.m., an hour after he was found.

Foul play is not suspected and the jail is conducting an internal investigation, as are the West Virginia State Police, Malinoski said. Davenport’s body was sent to the medical examiner.

Davenport was arrested by the Morgantown Police Department in South Park on June 26. The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department responded to a shooting about 1 a.m. that morning and identified Davenport and Nicholas Curtis, 27, as suspects following an investigation.

Both were charged with armed robbery and Davenport was charged with wanton endangerment. Both were being held on $100,000 bond. Curtis is still listed as an NCRJ inmate on its website as of Wednesday.

A juvenile woman was grazed in the chest and taken to J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment of the non-life threatening injury, Sheriff Perry Palmer said.
