MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After two seasons as head coach of the Fairmont State men’s basketball program, Joe Mazzulla is set to become an assistant with the Boston Celtics.
The news was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Mazzulla did not return a message for comment from The Dominion Post.
Mazzulla is a former West Virginia standout who was a part of the 2010 Final Four team. In five seasons at the school — he received a medical redshirt after the start of his junior season because of a shoulder injury — Mazzulla scored 700 points and dished out 370 assists.
In two seasons as head coach at Fairmont State, Mazzulla went 43-17 and the Falcons earned an at-large berth to the 2019 NCAA Division II Tournament — where they fell to Mercyhurst, 63-60, in overtime in the first round. Fairmont State finished with a record of 22-9 last season.
Mazzulla is not new to the Celtics. He was an assistant on their then-D League team, the Maine Red Claws, during the 2016-17 season after three seasons as an assistant at Fairmont State. He spent one season with the Red Claws before returning as head coach at Fairmont State for the 2017-18 season.
