MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On his first West Virginia Day, Neal Brown was able to celebrate properly.
Brown picked up his first in-state commit at West Virginia in the form of Fairmont Senior defensive lineman Zach Frazier.
Frazier, a three-star recruit who is rated as the No. 3 player in the state for the Class of 2020, committed to the Mountaineers Thursday. He is entering his senior year at Fairmont Senior.
Frazier, a 6-foot-2, 277-pound defensive tackle, helped lead the Polar Bears to the Class AA state title as a junior. He’s also won the state heavyweight wrestling crown all three years of his high school career.
Frazier joins a pipeline of Polar Bears to come to WVU, and that’s just on the defensive line alone. Former Fairmont stars Darius and Dante Stills are expected to be major contributors for West Virginia’s defensive line this season.
Frazier chose the proximity of WVU over scholarship offers from Louisville, Virginia Tech and Stanford.
Brown has made in-state recruiting a priority, giving several of his assistants a recruiting territory within West Virginia. Offensive line coach Matt Moore covers Fairmont.
None of the top five in-state players in the Class of 2019 ended up signing with WVU, including five-star offensive linemen Doug Nester and Darnell Wright. Earlier this week, Bluefield defensive end Sean Martin committed to North Carolina.
Frazier is the ninth overall player to commit in West Virginia’s 2020 recruiting class.
