Letters to the Editor

June 19 letters to the editor

Thanks for attention to
issues before Catholics
Regarding your article in Saturday’s newspaper under the headline: “Many outraged by actions and non-actions of church leaders.”

West Virginia Catholics are voicing a broad range of opinions about the appropriate responses to the recent scandals in our diocese. We are grateful that the press is listening, since it may help our leadership to do likewise.

The letter from the group, Lay Catholic Voices for Change, reflects a process of deliberation among our members. It does not address the status of the three monsignors who were named in the independent report cited by the Washington Post.

Our group has not taken a stand on that issue, in part because that report has not been made public. But to be clear, only the third person interviewed in the article, Allison DeGeorge, articulated the position agreed upon by the group. We would appreciate if your reporter could clearly distinguish when someone is stating their own opinion rather than representing the consensus of a group.

Thank you for your continuing attention to these issues of great importance to West Virginia Catholics.

Brandonville Pike in
need of maintenance
I realize there are many roads in need of repair and a lot of complaints. I have been in this area, — Bruceton-Brandonville — for 69 years and never have I seen the roads in such bad shape.

Do we have a crew of (Division of Highways) guys working in Bruceton-Brandonville, Clifton and other surrounding areas?

Our ditches getting cleaned are a thing of the past as is mowing along roadsides. They borrow our road crew to do sidewalk repairs in Kingwood. Why, when there is plenty of work in this area to be done?

Brandonville Pike is beyond patching, and there is plenty of traffic with people going to work. I’m sure their vehicles are damaged.

I care because of the money allocated for our area. Why aren’t the roads paved? Kingwood and Morgantown seem to have good roads.

There is water running across the road on Brandonville Pike, and it freezes up in the winter. Do we need to wait for an accident to happen as in the past?

Student grateful for
help with his project
Thank you, thank you, thank you. When I wrote a letter to you back in February asking you to send items of interest that might help me learn about your state, I had no idea that I would receive over 20 pieces of mail from your state.

I was so excited when packages started arriving from different places in West Virginia. I received so much WVU gear, ornaments, personal letters and photographs, pins and many other awesome and unique items. I couldn’t fit all the good stuff you sent me on my little shoe box.

Since you shared so much information with me about West Virginia, I wanted to share a little bit of information with you about Virginia. There are five regions in my state: Coastal Plain, Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Valley and Ridge and Appalachian Plateau. The state tree is the dogwood.

This project could not have been the success that it was without you. I am so grateful.
