MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — For the second time in three years, former West Virginia men’s basketball forward Teddy Allen is leaving a school.
In a statement released by Wichita State on Tuesday, Allen was dismissed from the school after he was arrested last week following a disturbance at a woman’s home.
“Coach (Gregg) Marshall and I met over the weekend to discuss the situation and the time that Teddy has spent within our program,” Wichita State athletics director Darron Boatright said in the statement. “We came to this decision jointly and agreed that this is best for the program. We wish Teddy well moving forward.”
Allen was arrested last Thursday after a woman accused him of causing a disturbance at her home, destroying her iPhone7 and stealing keys before fleeing on foot. He was later charged with domestic violence property crime and petty theft, both misdemeanors. He faces a July 29 arraignment.
“I’m both disappointed and sad, and I’m regretful that I wasn’t able to help Teddy more,” Marshall said in the statement. “I wish Teddy nothing but the best in his future.”
Allen came to West Virginia as part of the Mountaineers’ 2017 recruiting class that also included Wes Harris, D’Angelo Hunter and Brandon Knapper. Only Knapper still remains on the current WVU roster.
Allen was a 6-foot-5 high-scoring guard who signed with the Mountaineers from Boys Town (Neb.) High, where he was the state’s 2017 Gatorade Player of the Year.
He played in 35 games as a freshman at West Virginia and averaged 7.0 points per game, but was in and out of Bob Huggins’ favor for much of the season. He was benched for two games in the middle of the season in what Huggins said then was an effort to get Allen to listen.
Following his freshman season, Allen transferred to Wichita State, where he was denied an NCAA waiver to become eligible to play immediately last season.
Allen sat out last season and was expected to become a starter for Wichita State this season.
