MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Four-star power forward prospect Isaiah Cottrell helped West Virginia get rolling toward its 2020 recruiting class Thursday.
Cottrell announced on his Instagram page that he had picked the Mountaineers over such schools as Kansas, Arizona Texas Tech, LSU and a host of others.
“They have showed that they really want me and not just that they need me,” Cottrell told Rivals.com. “Their efforts coming out to Las Vegas and across the country at times to see practice and come and check on me stand out.”
A 6-foot-9, 215-pound prospect out of Bishop Gorman High — a private school in Las Vegas — Cottrell is ranked 64th overall by Rivals.com and 63rd overall by ESPN in the 2020 class.
He is the Mountaineers’ first commitment in the 2020 class.
Cottrell is the son of former WVU player Brian Lewin, who was the Mountaineers’ starting center on the 1998 Sweet 16 team under Gale Catlett.
Cottrell was a high priority for Bob Huggins and his staff and he took an official visit to the school last September.
The Mountaineers currently have two open scholarships heading into the 2019-20 season with guards Jermaine Haley and Chase Harler graduating at the end of the season.
