MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown freshman Breonna Marietta burst onto the scene for the Mohigans this season, earning a Class AAA special honorable mention by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
Marietta, a center fielder, was joined by teammates Brianna McKenzie and Gracie Haines, who were recognized as honorable mentions.
University’s Autumn Stemple and Hayden Powroznik were also named honorable mentions. Preston’s Haley Livengood earned the same distinction.
For Hurricane’s softball team, that statement never rang more true as the Redskins used a powerful middle of the lineup and solid pitching to earn their fifth consecutive Class AAA championship while finishing 33-6 in 2019.
As a result, Hurricane led the way with four selections on the Class AAA all-state softball team, led by captain and senior infielder Caiti Mathes.
“I’m just super proud because we said we were going to finish better than we started and we got better every game,” Hurricane coach Meghan Stevens said. “It all comes down to culture. Our girls all get along. They love each other and they dig in for each other. It makes it that much more special.”
Mathes, a Marshall signee, had one of the more impressive seasons seen in West Virginia softball history, batting .607 for the season with 22 home runs and 73 runs batted in (RBIs) to lead the Hurricane attack.
