MORGANTOWN, W. Va — George Campbell, a former 5-star wide receiver recruit, is coming to West Virginia as a graduate transfer after earning his degree at Florida State. Campbell is the 25th and final member of West Virginia’s 2019 recruiting class.
Campbell’s transfer was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.
Campbell was the No. 3-ranked wide receiver in the Class of 2015 according to the 247Sports composite rankings, and Rivals considered him the 26th-best recruit in the country at all positions.
That potential hasn’t been matched with production in an injury-riddled career at Florida State. Campbell has 13 career catches for 206 yards. He played as a true freshman in 2015, but then redshirted the following year after undergoing surgery to remove a loose piece of bone in his hip.
Campbell played four games in 2017 before complications from his initial surgery forced him to go under the knife once more and miss the remainder of that season. He played in only seven games last season as younger players passed him on the depth chart.
In February, Campbell initially committed to transfer to Penn State. He backed off that commitment last week, just prior to his expected arrival in Happy Valley.
Campbell’s arrival helps the Mountaineers shore up a position where they are losing their top three players from last season. David Sills and Gary Jennings are in the NFL, and Marcus Simms is in the transfer portal.
The news of Campbell’s pending arrival is a welcome one for West Virginia, which saw all-Big 12 safety Kenny Robinson enter the transfer portal earlier on Tuesday.
