Just like the snake who saw an opportunity and made its escape, a Twitter user, who identified themselves only as a WVU graduate that works in the digital and social media industry, saw an opportunity and created @MorgantownSnake with hopes of making a few people laugh.
“I was inspired to make this account after I saw how everyone was responding across social media to the news of the loose python,” the creator said. “There’s an entire account dedicated to mocking the PRT, so why not this?”
The creator said he’s been surprised by the account’s rapid growth. Created on Friday, the account has more than 2,300 followers as of Monday evening.
“Creating a parody account about a snake is not something I’m sure too many people are familiar with. I expected to just slither along with a couple followers and it seemingly exploded overnight,” they said.
As to the future, they plan to see it through to the end no matter if it’s a return to captivity or an icy death come winter. Or maybe it turns into a Morgantown legend.
“Maybe it’ll be an open-ended conclusion that allows the mythology of “Morgantown Snake” to continue for some time.”
