Miss Melva J. Humphrey, 98, formerly of Wadestown, died Sunday May 12, 2019, at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown.
She was born Nov. 6, 1920.
Miss Humphrey was the retired deaconess of the Scotts Run Settlement House in Morgantown, which she served from 1983-’85. After leaving Morgantown, she moved to Wadestown, where she was the part time local pastor of the Wadestown Charge of the United Methodist churches from 1985-’93. She served the Wadestown, Oak Forest, Valley Chapel and Mt. Tabor churches. She was a member of the Clay-Battelle Senior Citizens.
Melva was the last surviving member of her family.
She is survived by her friend, Betty Shaver, who is a resident of the Mapleshire Nursing Home in Morgantown, and all of Betty’s extended family. When Melva moved to Wadestown, she was adopted by the Shaver family.
At Melva’s request, her body will be cremated.
A memorial service will be held at Owen-Neely Funeral Home, Blacksville, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, with the Rev. Rose Saunders officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the service time.
Her cremains will be buried at Wadestown Cemetery at a later date.
