Is DOH just messing with
the traveling public?
It seemed as it took forever to complete the reconstruction on Interstate 79 between the Star City exit and the Pennsylvania line. Even after it appeared that the work was complete, the cones remained. But eventually the lanes were opened.
On April 23 I was on my way to Pittsburgh and found that the cones were once again up on I-79 between the Star City exit and the Pennsylvania line. There were at least two locations where the pavement in the right lane was being removed and the base upgraded.
In the driving lane I had to avoid at least two potholes. So the left lanes going north will also need to be repaired just six or so months after a major upgrade. Where was the quality control and inspectors on this project which lasted 12 months?
On the way back from Pittsburgh I found cones up in the southbound lanes. No equipment, no workers, just cones. I believe they placed the cones there just to annoy me.
On the same day, I read in the Dominion Post that repairs on the Pierpont bridge over Interstate 68 which was initiated by Kelly Paving, on April 4, creating lane closures, will continue through Nov. 1. A representative from Kelly Paving said that he had five men on the job.
I admit that I know little about road construction, but I know a little about management. It seems ridiculous to me that on such a major project as this there are but five men working on the project. If there were, say, 10 men working on the project the completion date could be shortened.
The traveling public will have to endure months of delays just because the Division of Highways didn’t shorten the completion date.
Sometimes I think the DOH does things just to annoy the traveling public.
