Yvonne Pierce

Yvonne J. Pierce,  97, wife of the late Robert B. Pierce, died October 6, 2018, at Bloom of St. Pete Assisted Living Facility, St. Petersburg, Fla.  On this Mother’s Day she is lovingly remembered by friends and family.

Yvonne attended Lawrence University, in Appleton, Wis., and received her BS degree in history from the University of Wisconsin.  She was listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges and was active in Sigma Chi Sigma Honorary Society.  She also took graduate classes at the University of Michigan and West Virginia University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.

Yvonne taught English and history in Detroit and met her husband there. They married in 1946, and moved to Morgantown, where her husband and his father owned and operated several pharmacies for over 60 years.

In addition to substitute teaching, she taught Adult Basic Education classes at the Morgantown Vocational Technical Center, which were part of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty to help adults get their GED.

She was very active with the Service League of Morgantown and was president of that organization from 1960-61.  She was a member of the Monongalia General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and treasurer of the Suncrest Garden Club.

In 1983, she and Robert moved to Deep Creek Lake, Md. and spent summers there and winters in Pinellas Park, Fla.  In 1997, they moved to Fla full-time.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, in Morgantown and St. Petersburg, Fla. where she was active with Presbyterian Women and served as Treasurer.  She volunteered at the St. Petersburg Free Clinic and the Beth-El Farmworker Ministry, where she taught classes.

She is survived by three sons, Daniel (Wayne), in Tomkins Cove, N.Y., David (Michael), in Lake Oswego Ore., and Rick (Joy), in Clearwater Fla.; and three grandchildren, Jennifer, Kristen, and Stephen, all living in eastern Md.

A brief celebration of her life was held in the memorial garden of St. Petersburg First Presbyterian Church, November 12, 2018, where her ashes are interred.
In her memory, the family requests making a donation to the Children’s Services Committee of the Old Stone.
