Sylvia Frances Hussing Dunn, 98, of Snake Hill Road, was taken by the angels to glory land on Monday, May 6, 2019. She was born August 29, 1920, on Snake Hill Road and has called it home for the past 98 years. She was the eldest daughter of Charles and Ethel Hussing.
She was a faithful member of Tyrone United Methodist Church and built a foundation of faith within her family, planting seeds along the way that will continue to grow for many generations.
Miss Sylvia worked at Morgan Shirt Factory, volunteered with visiting homemakers, Meals on Wheels and Tyrone Christian Helpers to name a few. She was also a compassionate caregiver, opening her own home to care for family and extended family alike.
Over the years, Miss Sylvia acquired many skills that made her a successful homemaker. She was an accomplished quilter, creating the coveted gifts that would be given out each Christmas. Her vegetable garden was a sacred place where memories were made, hands got dirty, and hearts would be filled with joy. She taught her children and grandchildren the importance of respecting nature and being thankful for an abundant harvest. In the fall, the family would gather to make apple butter, and can vegetables, in the summer, berry picking on the steep slopes of Dolly Sods and the annual trip to the WV State Fair to attend the multitude of equestrienne events.
Her adventurous spirit would lead her and her husband to travel across the country visiting 49 of the 50 states. Her calloused hands, common sense approach, and persistence will be missed by so many. She was and will be one of our communities most loved and admired matriarchs. No matter the task, Sylvia would find joy in shared experiences that would last a lifetime. Precious moments have now become treasured memories.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Dale Dunn and Darrell Dunn and wife Sharon; daughters-in-law, Nancy Smith and Mary Ann Dunn; son-in-law, Philip Cale; two sisters, Georgia Hammack, all of Snake Hill, and Hazel Galloway and husband Kermit, of Bruceton Mills; grandchildren, Bobby Nelson Dunn (Barbara), Daleen Cornwell (Michael), Christine Dunn Murphy (Neal), Dana Johnson (Oogie), Dean Cale, Janice Collins (Greg); 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ethel; her husband of 82 years, Amos Dunn; son, Bobby Nelson Dunn, Sr.; daughter, Wilma Jean Cale; granddaughter, Cindy Stone; nine brothers, Carl, Everett, Dick, Allen, Clyde, Lester, Fred, Lloyd, Leroy and one sister, Madge Friend.
Family will receive friends at the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home from 3 – 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 and from 10 a.m. on Friday, until time of services at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Barbara Dunn officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved Amos at the Dunn Cemetery.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Morgantown Amedisys Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion given to Sylvia.
