WESTOVER — An Ohio man is accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Westover.
Kurtis R. Byrd, 50, of Youngstown, is charged with second-degree sexual assault.
About 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Westover Police responded to the Econo Lodge on Commerce Drive to speak with the girl’s mother, who called 911, Chief Rick Panico said.
The victim’s mother said her daughter was at a McDonald’s drive through when Byrd got in the car, Panico told The Dominion Post. According to court documents, Byrd sexually assaulted the girl in the Econo Lodge’s parking lot. After the daughter got home, she told her mom what happened, Panico said.
Byrd was detained without incident about 12:30 a.m., on Monday, when he returned to the hotel and officers spotted him attempting to hide his gray Mazda behind some tractor-trailers, Panico said.
At the hospital, a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE), performed an exam on the victim, collecting evidence indicating a sexual assaulted occurred, a criminal complaint stated. Evidence collected corroborated the victim’s statements and Byrd was charged.
Byrd was arraigned in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on Monday morning and bond was set at $100,000 by Magistrate Sandy Holepit.
