MORGANTOWN — The WVU Campus Club will host one of two annual gatherings that bring all of its members together Tuesday. The Spring Luncheon, at Atria’s Restaurant, also serves as the club’s business meeting.
Socializing will begin at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at noon.
What began in 1912 as a club meant to foster friendships among WVU faculty and their families in a formal, white-gloved setting where tea was served, has evolved into an activities based-group, which is seeking members from the wider community to join its ranks.
“We opened up membership over 10 years ago,” said past president Nancy Abrams. “We want people to understand there’s culture here and make friends.”
Members may participate in any of the organization’s interest groups, which include morning and evening book discussions, dinner and a movie, lunch social, bridge, walking, dining, quilting and Scrabble.
“The walking groups meet weekly,” she said. “while the other ones meet once a month and throughout the summer.”
In addition to the spring luncheon, there’s a welcome meeting in the fall, where people are encouraged to become members.
Erin Smaldone, education director at the West Virginia Botanic Garden, will be the guest speaker Tuesday.
“We try by any means possible to get the word out about the garden to different facets of the community,” Smaldone said. “We want to let people know the benefits of being here, coming to the programs, walking around and enjoying time on your own or with your family, with your dogs. We have programs that are of interest to all ages.”
Those interested in attending the luncheon must call or email Abrams at 304-598-0043 or nabrams6@comcast.net by today. Attendees will have the opportunity to win a handmade quilt, the proceeds from the contest will go to the WVU Campus Club Scholarship Fund in memory of Lillian Waugh.
