Letters to the Editor

Letters to the editor April 8

City Council needs to call in Republic on its contract
If redundancy is a model for improvement then let this letter to the editor be part of the solution.
Something needs to be done immediately to improve the ridiculously poor garbage pickup performance of Republic Services.
My area (different than Dave. Ornick’s — DP-April 1) is not impervious to missed pickups, either. Over the last six months, our service has degenerated into a 50-50 proposition. It has also been months since I paid my full monthly bill.
Our garbage is supposed to be picked up before 7 a.m.  Wednesday morning  (as established by common practice over the last 10-plus years) and if it has not been collected by 5 p.m. on Thursday, then I wheel the can back into the garage.
That also means that first Friday morning I’ll be on the telephone with Republic, indicating that my account needs credited for a missed pickup. My hope is calling them is one thing, but when you start taking money out of Republic’s pocket, that makes it a “whole new game.” Money has a whole other language all of its own.
April 3 was the 14th Wednesday of this calendar year and of that number our area was not serviced either six or seven times.
Action by Morgantown City Council (or the powers that be) needs to be taken immediately to correct this problem.
After meeting with Republic,  if it cannot put its own house in order and provide the service  we expect and fairly pay for, then maybe another company should be given the opportunity.

Hoping fountain in river is
restored during park project

It is heartening to read of the (DP-Thursday) the progress at Hazel Ruby McQuain Park.

Longtime residents of Morgantown will remember the fountain in the river in the vicinity of the stage. It was inaugurated on July Fourth, 2007, and lasted for about nine years. It was greatly appreciated by all visitors to the park.

As part of the multimillion renovation of the park it is sincerely hoped that a fountain, in the river, will be included in the planned restoration.
