Newburg working with DOH to get dirt for project in town

NEWBURG  — Some of the dirt from the Division of Highways’ ditching work in Preston County is being recycled by Newburg.
Newburg Mayor Edgar   Fortney said at Tuesday’s council meeting that dirt being dumped near town hall will be used to fill in the below the embankment behind town hall.
“It will make the area a lot easier to mow,” he said.
In other discussions, there was no update on  when the Independence water project will begin, according to  Fortney.  Earlier Morgan K. Coast of Vaughn, Coast & Vaughn, Inc., the project engineer,  said the route for the water line extension has changed.
The original plan was to use one of the top water towers because it could serve 70 customers.  He said now a lower tower will be used to provide water for 26 customers.  Coast said the project will provide water to just 26 of the 70  who requested service.

“We sat down and tried to work out which way would be the best way to go.  The engineer decided Market Street would be the shortest distance,” Sheena Hunt, executive director of the Region VI Planning and Development Council, said.  “The town will only pick up two customers  that wont be covered by the [Abandoned Mine Lands] funds.”  The original plan was to  take the line up Scotch Hill Road.

In other business, council set 9 a.m. until noon May 18  for its annual cleanup day.  There will be a $15 charge for one pickup truck load of garbage. Cleanup day is open to all Newburg garbage customers. Only one pickup truck load is allowed for each household.

Fortney said customers will be notified about tire pickup at a later date.
Council’s next meeting will be 6 p.m. May 7.
