World Autism Day is Tuesday, and a WVU Medicine center is hoping to bring awareness about it to Monongalia County.
According to a recent release, the WVU Medicine Children’s Neurodevelopmental Center, along with autism service providers in the county, will have several events that day.
“In partnership with our local and statewide community providers and organizations, such as the Mountaineer Autism Project (MAP), we are excited to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day in a concerted effort in the Morgantown area, by lighting the town up blue,” said Dr. Jodi Lindsey, pediatric neurologist, neurodevelopmental disabilities specialist, and director of the WVU Medicine Children’s Neurodevelopmental Center.
“We will be providing activities for our local families and friends to come together to spread awareness, share resources, and participate in fun activities for children and their parents.”
From 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, the center will hold a free Family Fun Night at Stepping Stones at Mylan Park.
Area autism service providers will be on hand to give information for parents and offer activities for kids, the release said. Activities, which are sensory friendly, will include music provided by local music therapists, therapy animals, an obstacle course for kids and free massages for parents. Food trucks will also be outside the building offering meals, while light snacks will be available inside.
In addition to the activities that day, several locations around town will be Lighting It Up Blue, including WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, the release said.
Monongalia County Ballpark is also getting in on the action. On Wednesday, the WVU Baseball team will take on Pitt starting at 6:30 p.m. All tickets cost only $1. Autism service information will be available at the game.
