MORGANTOWN — In its March 29 edition, Newsweek named WVU Medicine as one of the World’s Best Hospitals.
According to Newsweek, WVU Medicine ranks 159th of the hospitals in the United States.
The 2019 ranking lists hospitals from 11 countries, according to a recent news release from WVU Medicine. Those countries include the U.S. Canada, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and Israel. The release said the countries were chosen based on standard of living/life expectancy, population size, number of hospitals, and data availability.
“Our strategy is to provide the best quality and most comprehensive care to the people of West Virginia so they never have to leave the state to receive the care they need,” said Albert Wright Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Medicine WVU Health System and WVU Hospitals.
“We have been making great progress in this over the past few years, and to have our health system recognized by Newsweek as one of the best in the world validates our strategy.”
Newsweek partnered with Statista Inc. to create the list. Statista is a global market research and consumer data company.
When introducing the list, Newsweek stated, 1,000 “hospitals were selected based on recommendations from medical professionals, patient survey results and medical performance indicators.
“For the recommendations, Statista collaborated with GeoBlue and invited tens of thousands of doctors, hospital managers and other healthcare professionals to an online survey.”
According to the WVU Medicine release, four WVU Medicine hospitals also ranked in last year’s U.S. News’ Best Hospitals in the U.S.
“The hospitals on this list are at the forefront of adapting to these new challenges while providing top-notch patient care,” Newsweek stated.
The five best hospitals in the world, according to Newsweek’s list are:
1. Mayo Clinic — Rochester, Rochester, Minn.
2. Cleveland Clinic — Cleveland, Ohio
3. Singapore General Hospital — Singapore.
4. The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, Md.
5 Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Berlin, Germany.
