MORGANTOWN — A house at 1280 Sabraton Avenue suffered damage estimated at $120,000 during a fire early Thursday afternoon.
Fire crews were dispatched to the scene just after 1 p.m. with scanner traffic indicating visible heavy smoke.
There was one person home at the time of the blaze. He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by Mon Health EMS, but refused transportation to the hospital for additional treatment.
The Morgantown Fire Department responded from all three stations and had the blaze under control in a little over an hour.
According to a press release issued by the city, an initial investigation indicates that the fire started in the rear of the building, though the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Bryan Riley, who lives feet away from the house, at 1279 Montrose Avenue, said he’d just come back inside from taking out the garbage when he heard a loud pop.
“Then I came out and saw the smoke and fire. I saw him run in and run back out, and I kept yelling ‘Don’t go back in. Don’t go back in.’ ” Riley said. “Whatever it was, it went up quick, cause not long after I saw the smoke, this whole back porch on was on fire.”
A resident of the house who was not home at the time of the fire indicated a pet cat was lost in the blaze.
Investigation of the fire is being handled by the Fire Marshal’s Division of the Morgantown Fire Department.
