MORGANTOWN — Freshman pitcher Autumn Stemple pitched seven innings and recorded 13 strikeouts as University High’s softball team defeated Wheeling Park, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon.
Stemple didn’t give up any earned runs, either, as Wheeling Park’s only runs came in the first inning off two past balls.
The Hawks’ were excellent offensively, collecting 11 hits. Kylie Phillips and Hayden Powroznik led the charge for University — the two combined for four hits and four RBIs. Lindsey Vorndran also had three hits.
UHS coach Mindy Parks was impressed with her team’s performance.
“Getting 11 hits against a team as good as Wheeling Park is huge,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve beat them since the first year I coached. I think it’s going to be a good season.”
