MORGANTOWN — High school junior girls are invited to apply to attend Rhododendron Girls State, which runs from June 9-14 at Davis and Elkins College.
Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, nearly 400 girls from throughout the state learn how democracy works by setting up a mock government complete with party structure and elections.
Two girls are chosen to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C.
Additional benefits of attending Girls State are a $500 essay contest, the Samsung Scholarship open to direct descendants of U.S. wartime veterans, and the opportunity to earn three hours of college credit from Clemson University, transferable to the college attended.
Morgantown area organizations and businesses sponsor girls from county high schools; girls provide transportation and spending money.
Girls in their junior year of high school, who are interested in attending should see their high school counselors for an application and additional information.
