David Harold Turner, 53, of the Snake Hill Road Community, Morgantown, passed unexpectedly on Saturday, March 2, 2019, following a brief illness at the J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born December 27, 1965, in Morgantown, son to Mitchell and Jean Miller Turner of Cheat Lake.
David was a graduate of University High School class of ‘84. He was a machinist by trade and was working as an Engineering Technician for WVU’s Civil Engineering Dept. This would have been his 33rd year of service. David was instrumental in helping engineering students compete in both the Steel Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions each year hosted by the American Society of Civil Engineers. David was a master of many trades and would often be called upon to solve many IT and other computer related tasks on campus. He helped students with their projects and experiments, often fabricating pieces and parts out of metal. He oversaw student workers, handled hazmat materials for the department, and supervised various labs where the students conducted experiments.
David was a member of Covenant Evangelical Methodist Church, where he was serving on the Board of Stewards and was a regular volunteer for the Health and Welfare program. David was also an exemplary Boy Scout and held leadership positions in Troop 52. He earned the Silver Beaver Award, Wood Badge and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.
David’s life was an example of living the Oath & Law of a scout, from his Christian faith, willingness to help others and his career at WVU. His compassion to support others and mentor our youth will leave a legacy that will live forever in those who knew and loved him best. He was a loving, supportive father and husband.
Surviving are his parents, Mitch and Jean Turner, of Cheat Lake; his wife of 32 years, Mrs. Virginia ‘Ginny’ Comstock Turner; two sons, Aaron and Nathan Turner, all of the Snake Hill Road community; one sister, Karen Thorn and husband Ron, of Grafton; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Family will receive friends at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, and from 4 – 8 p.m. on Friday. David will lie in repose at the Covenant Evangelical Methodist Church, 802 Green Bag Road, Morgantown, from 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, until time of services at 11 a.m. with Pastor Nate Williamson officiating. He will be laid to rest at Zion Cemetery, Sunset Beach Road, Morgantown.
The family requests donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Boy Scouts of America, Mountaineer Area Council, 1831 Speedway Rd, Fairmont, WV 26554 or to Covenant Church Health and Welfare Program, 802 Green Bag Road, Morgantown, WV 26508.
