Traffic on I-79 stopped for hours after accident

MORGANTOWN — A collision near mile marker 159 on Interstate 79 stopped traffic for about five hours on Friday.

According to West Virginia 511, both lanes reopened about 2:30 p.m.

A box truck rear-ended a broken down tractor trailer in the right-hand lane, Monongalia County Sheriff Perry Palmer said.

Both lanes were covered in a large amount of oil causing the closure, he said.

Palmer said the driver of the box truck was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The person had to be cut from his vehicle by the Star City Volunteer Fire Department and Mon Health EMS, he said.

The driver of the tractor trailer said he believed his transmission went out and at least three orange safety cones were around his vehicle — two of them run over, Palmer said.

The accident is still under investigation and names of those involved are not being released at this time.
