KINGWOOD — Renee C. Martin will spend three to 15 years in prison on charges of sexual assault.
Judge Steve Shaffer sentenced Martin to one to five years on each of three counts.
The sentences will run consecutively. Shaffer also sentenced Martin to 30 years supervised probation once she is released.
In April, Martin pleaded guilty under an information to having sex, oral sex and sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old juvenile boy at her home.
Assistant Prosecutor Megan Allender told the court she believed it was important the victim be an adult by the time Martin is released.
“He’s genuinely afraid of the defendant. She’s a predator,” Allendar said. “Three to
15 years is not enough.”
Martin’s attorney, Kristen D. Antolini, told the court her client was cooperative and took responsibility for her actions.
“Miss Martin has accepted responsibility and wants to apologize to the family and the court,” Antolini said. “She has served eight month and should be placed on probation for the rest of her sentence.”
When Shaffer asked Martin if she had anything to say she said she wanted to apologize.
“I am sorry,” Martin said. “I did not know it would go this far. It’s hurt both of our families. I wish it had not happened. It’s not his fault. I shouldn’t have put him in that position.”
Shaffer said the sentencing was unusual.
“It’s usually a male defendant and a young female victim,” he said. “You’re 46, and the victim was 14 or 15. If the roles were reversed, the court room would be full. That’s the way of society.
“I did some math here,” Shaffer added. “You could be walking the streets again at age 49. So in order to protect the young people of the state, upon your release, your extended time is 30 years supervised release,” he said. “Some might think that’s harsh, but if a
46-year-old male did this to a 14- or 15-year-old girl, people would be screaming for justice. There’s no difference.”
Shaffer gave Martin credit for the eight months served.
