MORGANTOWN — The Monongalia County Commission amended the county’s ambulance service provider agreement on Wednesday to allow more time for the merger of Mon EMS and WVU Hospitals Health Team Critical Care Transport.
Announced in late November, the merger was initially to be completed by spring. The extension will push the deadline back to June 1.
Ed Phillips, chief legal officer and general counsel for Mon Health System, said the parties are working well together but the spring deadline is no longer feasible.
“There are some things from a legal perspective that are taking some additional time — more so than what we perceived when we first came to the commission. So we’re asking for the extension based on that,” Phillips said.
The two entities will jointly manage the newly-formed ambulance service under a rebranded Mon EMS banner. A new board of directors will be convened and a job posting has gone up for a new executive director to oversee the agency.
The merger is part of the county’s move away from dispatching calls based on an agency priority list and to dispatches based on vehicle proximity.
In other county news, the commission approved a $6,000 funding request for the second annual Mon Baseball Classic.
The event, slated for April 26-27, serves as a showcase for high school baseball in West Virginia and gives student athletes an opportunity to play at Monongalia County Ballpark, the home of WVU Baseball and the West Virginia Black Bears.
This time around, the classic will feature five games over two days, including: University vs. George Washington and Morgantown vs. Ripley on April 26; and Trinity vs. Parkersburg Catholic, Spring Valley vs. Bridgeport and Moorefield vs. Notre Dame on April 27.
The commission provided $5,000 for the event last year.
The commission also:
— Approved requisition No. 7 totaling $4,063,462.71 for the Series 2016 A Bonds Project Fund for the University Town Centre TIF district.
— Has volunteer openings on the: West Run Board of Zoning Appeals, Mon County Planning Commission, Mon County Development Authority, Mon County Building Commission, Camp Muffly Park Advisory Board and Mason-Dixon Historical Park Advisory Board.
