MORGANTOWN — Strong winds lashed the region Sunday, uprooting trees and downing power lines.
“I know we’ve had at least 30 trees downed this afternoon,” said a dispatcher at 3:30 p.m. with MECCA 911, Monongalia County’s emergency dispatch center.
No injuries were reported, but at least a couple of those trees landed on houses, MECCA reported. Another crashing tree sent live power lines snaking across the driveway of another residence.
Gusts up to 65 mph were expected, as the National Weather Service placed Mon and most of north-central West Virginia under a high-wind warning through 7 a.m. Monday.
The winds come courtesy of a strong storm that originated in the Midwest over the weekend and tore across the Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said.
Sosnowski reminded residents in the path of the warning to secure items such as trash cans and recycle bins, as they can be turned into projectiles by the windy onslaught.
Continuing gusts of 40-50 mph can be expected later Monday.
