KINGWOOD — Eleven Preston High School junior girls will compete for the opportunity to reign as Queen Ceres during the 78th Annual Preston County Buckwheat Festival.
Sixteen contestants participated in the mini pageant on Saturday. The selection process included an interview with out-of-county judges and the presentation of a 30-second speech promoting the festival.
They will next compete in the Buckwheat Festival Royalty Pageant at 6 p.m. April 13 at the Craig Civic Center, in Kingwood. On that night two young ladies will be selected as maids of honor and one will be named Queen Ceres.
Six junior boys are competing for the title of King Buckwheat. They are evaluated on their involvement and overall knowledge of agriculture.
They will meet with judges during a visit to their farms. On another day they are required to present a speech on agriculture and participate in a formal interview with a different set of judges. The selection of King Buckwheat and the two runners-up will be announced at the royalty pageant.
The dates for the 2019 festival are Sept. 26-29. For additional information about the 78th Annual Preston County Buckwheat Festival visit the official site: www.buckwheatfest.com and on Facebook.
