MORGANTOWN — WVU students are thinking beyond the country’s borders.
The Panellenic Association at WVU recently raised $37,000 through a variety of fundraisers for the Circle of Sisterhood Foundation.
That money will go toward building a school in Malawi, a country in southeast Africa.
“We’re a nonprofit organization,” said Circle of Sisterhood on its website, “founded and powered by sorority women on a mission to raise financial resources to help remove education barriers for girls and women facing poverty and oppression.”
WVU fraternities and sororities held a variety of fundraisers in Morgantown to help the organization, including a 5K Color Run, cross-fit competition, penny wars competition, restaurant “spirit” fundraisers and bake sales.
“I consider myself blessed to have been able to work on this project for the past three semesters and am thankful to the women and men in the Greek community at WVU for all of their participation and donations,” said Rachel Rogers, Panhellenic vice president of philanthropy and service and Kappa Kappa Gamma member.
“This significant philanthropic endeavor is the power of Greek Life in action,” said Matthew Richardson, director of fraternity and sorority life. “Panhellenic took the lead, got others involved and made a difference.”
According to its website, Circle of Sisterhood has given more than $1 million to 24 countries and funded school builds in Malawi, Senegal, Haiti, Nepal and Nicaragua.
