MORGANTOWN — A lack of snow on the ground and a reversal of winds helped Monday reach a high of 66.
And, the warm weather will continue for the first half of this week.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek said if last week’s snow hadn’t melted, Monday would have stayed in the 50s. He explained the dry, powdery snow the Morgantown area received last week melts faster than thick, dense and icy snow. Dombek also credited the wind flowing from the south, rather than the north, for this week’s unusually high temps.
Today should reach the mid-50s with a little bit of “rain and drizzle,” holding the temperature from reaching the 60s again, Dombek said. Nighttime will bring a low of 42, he said.
Wednesday will continue with the on-again-off-again rain, but there’s a chance it could creep over 60 before dropping to the low-50s overnight, Dombek said.
Thursday will be the warmest day of the week and comparable to Monday. It could get as warm as 66 degrees, Dombek said.
“That should be it. The last hurrah of any warm weather,” he said. “Friday is our transition day.”
It will start off in the high-40s, but will be near freezing by the end of the day and Friday night will plummet to just 18 degrees, Dombek said.
The much more typical February weather will continue into the weekend, but it won’t be the cold, bitter arctic winds of last week, he said.
