George W. Sparks, Sr., 95, of Morgantown, formerly of MacArthur, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 21, 2019, at the residence of his daughter, Patti M. Varner.
He was born on November 4, 1923, in Yukon, a son of the late Major W. Sparks and late Ruby Bowman Sparks Creed.
Mr. Sparks was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the U.S.S. Shenango as a radioman/gunner, where he survived a plane crash into the Pacific Ocean.
Sparks owned and operated Sparks T.V. & Appliance on Prince St., in Beckley and Crab Orchard, for over 30 years. He was also one of the founders of the Beckley Midget Football League through the Beckley Civitan Club. He was a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a member of American Baptist Men. He was also a member of the Crab Orchard Lions Club.
He worked at a Motorola plant in Chicago where he met his late beloved wife of 65 years, Olga Maria Kosman Sparks. He was also an avid golfer till the age of 89, recording one hole-in-one.
He was preceded in death by step-father, Thomas Creed; brother, James Sparks; sister, Louise Zankowitz; brother, Fred Sparks; brother, Major Sparks; son-in-law, Fredrick Varner and his beloved wife of 65 years, Olga Maria Kosman Sparks.
He is survived by sister, Jane Ann Atkinson, of Beckley; son, George W. Sparks, Jr. and his spouse, Shandra Sparks, of Denver, Colo.; son, Michael W. Sparks and spouse Kathy Sparks, of Beckley; daughter, Patti M. Varner, of Morgantown; and son, Dale A. Sparks and spouse Lisa Ann Sparks, of Morgantown; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at Crab Orchard Baptist Church, in Crab Orchard, from 6 -8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24. Funeral services will be held at Crab Orchard Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 32 Honor Guard.
