On Jan. 14, 2019, Pamula Sue Hayhurst Pandolfi lost her two-year battle with lung cancer.
Pam, known as Penny to close family and friends, was born in Morgantown on April 9, 1954.
After graduating Morgantown High School, she secured a position in a local bank. In 1973, she was named a Princess in the mountain state’s annual Forest Festival by then Governor Arch Moore. It was here that she met her future husband, Peter Pandolfi. In 1975, the two were married and she embarked on her journey supporting Pete’s career as a U.S. Air Force officer.
After 20 years and multiple moves around the country, they settled in Manassas, Va. While in service, she became a key volunteer at several bases working with the base thrift shop, local Red Cross chapter and as an aide in the base hospital. She also served as the leader of Family Services at Vandenberg AFB, Calif. In 1983, she was honored at the Strategic Air Command’s Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.
After retiring from service in 1995, she acquired a job as warranty administrator for a Manassas car dealership. She quickly earned a reputation as one of the best warranty administrators in all of Northern Virginia and was sought after by numerous dealerships.
In 2009, she left the workforce due to health reasons which slowly became more debilitating culminating in her diagnosis of lung cancer in March 2017. She and her husband moved that year to Culpeper, Va., to be closer to her cancer treatments at the UVA Emily Couric Cancer Center, in Charlottesville.
She is survived by her husband, Peter; their three children, Patricia Helms, Paul Pandolfi and Phillip Pandolfi; and two granddaughters, Victoria and Felicity.
She was preceded in death by her father, Russell J. Hayhurst; mother, Roxie V. (Bumgardner) Hayhurst; stepmother, Eileen (Moore) Hayhurst; and brother, Robert R. Hayhurst.
Viewing will be at the Pierce Funeral Home, in Manassas, from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 25, with funeral services at 10 a.m. Jan. 26.
There will be a memorial service at the Laurel Point Church, in Morgantown, for family and friends in West Virginia on Feb. 9.
Her internment will be in the Quantico National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Feb. 12.
Donations to either the American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital are welcome in lieu of flowers.
