Cathleen M. Shaw died on Jan. 16, 2019, with her daughter at her bedside, in the most compassionate and capable hands of the Delaware Hospice, at the age of 86.
She was born in Morgantown, to Minnie Belle and William R. Starkey, and was a devoted sister to Richard, Ron, Wilbert, James Ray, Robert, Arthur, Anna Mae, Lucinda (Sis), Isabelle (Burl), Irene (Lucy), Vernie and Dolly, who all preceded her in death.
Married to Donald Lee Shaw, in 1951, she was widowed two months later at age 19, due to the Bunker Coal Mine disaster. She never remarried.
Cathy made her way to the Eastern Shore of Maryland ultimately settling in the Seaford, Delaware area. With the untimely death of her sister, Anna Mae, she adopted her niece at age 4, as a single parent, and began to build businesses with nothing but a grade school education and sheer determination resulting in Kathy’s Corner Market, Blades BP and the K&B Restaurant. She loved playing cards and fishing most of all.
She leaves behind her beloved pets, Suds, Peaches and Pumpkin; daughter, MaryAnn; and nieces and nephews.
There will be no formal service at this time. Burial will be private in West Virginia with a celebration of life planned for the summer in Morgantown with details to follow.
