MORGANTOWN — Seven assistant coaches hired by new West Virginia football coach Neal Brown will receive considerable boosts in salary from their previous stops while also staying well within WVU’s staffing budget.
The Dominion Post received their contracts Tuesday via a Freedom of Information Act request to WVU.
Leading the way is defensive coordinator Vic Koenning, who will make $650,000 in the first year of his three-year contract.
Koenning’s deal is a considerable savings compared to outgoing defensive coordinator Tony Gibson, who was scheduled to make $950,000 in 2019.
It’s also quite a boost for Koenning, who made $300,000 as Troy’s defensive coordinator in 2018. Koenning will receive a raise of $25,000 in each of the final two years of his contract.
The other six coaches thus far added to Brown’s staff have signed two-year deals.
Offensive line coach Matt Moore will receive $425,000 a year. This is less than the $501,000 West Virginia paid previous offensive line coach Joe Wickline, but gives Moore a nice boost over the $195,000 he made as Troy’s offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator.
Chad Scott, whose official title has not yet been disclosed, will make $400,000 with the Mountaineers. Scott made $300,000 as North Carolina’s tight ends coach last year, and he had recently agreed to coach running backs at Louisville before being hired by West Virginia.
Former Mountaineers defensive back Jahmile Addae will make $325,000. Addae had a salary of $230,000 in his previous role coaching Minnesota’s defensive backs.
Defensive line coach Jordan Lesley will make $250,000 annually, up from $110,000 at Troy. Previous West Virginia defensive line coach Bruce Tall made $313,575 in 2018.
Al Pogue, who was Brown’s cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator at Troy, will make $225,000. His position emphasis at WVU has not been announced. Pogue made $115,000 at Troy.
Sean Reagan, who was Troy’s quarterbacks coach, rounds out the staff at $200,000 per year. Reagan made $130,000 at Troy.
All seven coaches have the same buyout provisions. If any takes another coaching position without obtaining permission to interview from WVU, they owe 25 percent of their remaining contract. If they take a job within the Big 12, they would owe the full remainder of their contract.
There are three full-time positions remaining on Brown’s coaching staff. He has $3.5 million to spend on assistants salaries.
